Air conditioning systems are largely maintenance-free day to day, but a few warning signs are worth acting on quickly rather than waiting for a full breakdown.
1. Reduced airflow or cooling power
If a room that used to cool quickly now takes noticeably longer, the most common causes are a blocked filter restricting airflow or a refrigerant level issue — both are quick to diagnose and often quick to fix.
2. Unusual noises
A quiet, consistent hum is normal. Rattling, grinding, or a noticeably louder operating volume than when the system was installed usually points to a mechanical issue worth having looked at before it worsens.
3. Water leaking or pooling near the indoor unit
Air conditioning units produce condensation as a normal part of operation, drained away through a small pipe. Water appearing where it shouldn't usually means that drainage path is blocked or damaged.
4. A noticeable rise in electricity usage
If your system is working harder than it used to for the same result, running costs creep up even before performance visibly drops — often the earliest sign something needs attention.
5. It's simply been a while
Even a system showing no obvious symptoms benefits from a periodic check — refrigerant levels, electrical connections and filter condition are all easy to verify and cheap to catch early, expensive to ignore.
